Every day you ask yourself many questions, which is often an unconscious process, just like the way you answer them. If you haven't noticed it before, it might surprise you. What might also surprise you is that these questions define how you feel.

You can change your life instantly when you ask yourself better questions. Let's find the truth about it.

Questions control your focus

Look around for 15 seconds, memorizing everything that is blue. Now close your eyes and name everything that is red.

Did you come up with anything? Do it again, but now memorize everything that is red around you. After 15 seconds, close your eyes and name everything green. This easy but commonly used exercise shows how questions control your focus.

Let's take a look at different situations to understand the impact of the power of questions. Let's say you're waiting for a bus or a train to arrive, and suddenly you hear someone ask: "What time is it?" Would you turn to see if they posed that question to you? I think almost everyone will answer the question, because when you hear a question, you automatically answer it.

This is often repeated several times throughout the day, unconsciously most of the time. In other words, out of the questions you ask yourself, one question might distract you. When you improve the quality of your questions, you improve the quality of your focus.

What are quality questions?

Take a look at the following two questions:

  • Why do I not like healthy food?
  • How can I make eating healthy food more enjoyable?

When you ask yourself these questions, you automatically start looking for answers. For the first question, your answers are likely to focus on the negative things, as the question itself focuses on the negative. The second question directs your focus to find solutions.

The quality of your question determines the quality of your answers. Your answers represent how you think and feel.

Think about what will happen if you keep asking questions that weaken you?

  • Why am I not good enough to succeed?
  • Why am I never happy?
  • Why do I not deserve love?

When you ask yourself these questions, your mind will find an answer. Over time, you begin to believe these answers. But what would happen if you asked yourself the previous questions in a different way?

  • What can I do today to get closer to success?
  • What is something I can do today that I really enjoy?
  • In what way can I love myself today?

Questions are very moving. The right questions can help you shift your focus and feel more positive.

Power of Questions

The benefits of asking better questions

Quality questions give you good answers. This easy idea can change your life, but how exactly does it change your life? Here is a short list of the benefits of quality questions power:

  • Gaining higher awareness: When you ask questions to learn rather than judge, your awareness expands rapidly. Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt believed that curiosity is the greatest gift.
  • Improving ideas: Asking yourself better questions is the quickest way to improve the quality of your ideas. It enables critical thinking, which is a good skill.
  • Boosting creativity: High-quality questions direct your focus toward solutions, not problems. As we've discussed, you'll find answers to the questions you ask yourself.
  • Developing empathy: When you understand the power of questions, you can use this to improve your relationships too. Instead of assuming how other people feel, ask them about it. This helps you to understand them better and develop empathy.
  • Progressing: Asking better questions helps you learn and advance faster. After all, there's a lot we don't know, and we shouldn't say we're past the age of seeking knowledge.

Of course, we should not forget the most important benefit of all. Quality questions can instantly divert your attention, which might immediately improve your quality of life.

Simple tips for asking better questions

Asking more powerful and empowering questions is something anyone can learn. However, it is not something you will learn overnight, as it requires some effort and perseverance. The first step is always to become aware of the questions that you ask yourself. Here are the best tips for improving the quality of your questions:

1. Rephrase the question

Take some time to write down some of the questions that seem to come up a lot. What are the things that worry you? What is on your mind most often? For example, suppose you find it difficult to get out of bed, the question you might be thinking of is: “Why can I not get out of bed?”

As we said, your brain loves to answer questions. Here, the answers focus on why you can't get out of bed, which won't give you strength. So instead, rephrase the question in a solution-focused way, for example: “What will motivate me to get out of bed?”

The paraphrasing technique is easy. With practice, you can train yourself to become better at asking yourself quality questions.

2. Be curious

Curiosity is a great tip for self-reflection as well as for social interactions. Mostly, we stop asking questions because we think we already know the answers. This is where we start making assumptions based on what we think we know. However, how often are we wrong in the assumptions we make?

Most of the time, there are many factors that we do not take into account. Thus, our assumptions are only half correct at best. So when you enhance your curiosity, it is natural that you will ask more questions.

Albert Einstein said: “I have no special talents. I am just very curious.” So curiosity can help you break out of the negative thought loops that many of us get stuck in.

Here is an example of the thought: “I am not good enough.” Here is how you can bring curiosity to this thought: “Why do I think I am not good enough?” Begin by asking why you believe in certain things or feel that way, as curiosity will help you explore your inner world.

Power of Questions

3. Doubt the results

How much you think is the truth is actually the truth. How do you answer the following question: Is eating meat good for us? Is breakfast the most important meal of the day or is it just a marketing gimmick?

The reason for choosing these questions is that you will likely have a strong opinion about them, and opinions differ slightly. Here's another example: No one thought it was possible to run 1 km in 4 minutes until athlete Roger Bannister did it.

What we are trying to say is  that you should always remain flexible and open to new ideas, insights, or even a shift in beliefs. Seek learning rather than support, and be aware when you are wrong.

4. Keep practicing

Anything worth pursuing or developing takes time, constant effort, and patience. The same applies to improving the quality of your questions. Asking yourself more powerful questions is a challenge that requires effort, especially in the beginning. It is more comfortable to ask the questions you are used to.

However, if you want to live a happier life, putting in the effort to ask better questions is worth it. With continuous practice, you'll develop a new habit over time. When this happens, you won't have to put in as much effort. You will automatically use the power of questions in a more beneficial way, and enjoy it for the rest of your life.
